What is Brevis?
Brevis is an infrastructure protocol that makes it easier to use blockchain data in apps. Normally it’s difficult and expensive to process older data directly in smart contracts. Brevis solves this by analyzing the data off-chain and then having only a small proof verified on the blockchain.
On blockchains like Ethereum, a great deal of valuable information is stored—transactions, interactions with smart contracts, and logs. This data is public but difficult to use directly within new applications. For example, if a smart contract wants to check what a wallet has done in the past, it can be expensive and technically complex.
Brevis aims to solve this by acting as an additional computation layer. The protocol processes historical data off the main chain, generates a cryptographic proof from it and then has that proof verified on-chain. The blockchain then only has to verify the proof, not the full computation.
How does Brevis work?
Brevis works as a so-called zero-knowledge coprocessor. That means the network performs computations based on existing blockchain data and generates a cryptographic proof (proof).
Such a proof can then be verified on a blockchain. The blockchain therefore does not have to reprocess all historical data itself. Ultimately, only the proof is verified.
The BREV token
BREV is the token of the Brevis protocol and plays a direct role in how the network functions.
Within Brevis, fees for generating and verifying zero-knowledge proofs are paid in BREV. Anyone who wants to participate as a prover in the network must also stake BREV (or receive stake via delegation). BREV also has a governance function. Token holders can, for example, help decide on certain network parameters.
The total supply of BREV is set at 1 billion tokens.
The technology behind Brevis
The core of Brevis is zero-knowledge cryptography. With zero-knowledge proofs, someone can prove that a computation was carried out correctly without revealing all the underlying data.
Brevis combines this with an infrastructure layer that makes data from blockchains accessible for further computations. The protocol thus functions as a sort of computation layer on top of existing blockchains.
Importantly, Brevis itself is not a replacement for Ethereum or other networks. It functions as an additional layer that makes blockchain data usable in new applications.
The Brevis ecosystem
Brevis focuses primarily on developers and protocols that:
- Want to use historical blockchain data in smart contracts
- Want to integrate zero-knowledge proofs
- Want to build more complex logic without high gas costs
