DAC8: What does it mean for you?
New regulations for crypto-asset service providers are in effect throughout the European Union: DAC8. This is a European directive aimed at increasing transparency around crypto transactions. What exactly does it entail? And what will you notice as a BLOX user? We explain it step by step.

What is DAC8?
DAC8 is a European directive focused on increasing tax transparency regarding crypto, the reporting thereof, and improving cooperation between tax authorities within the European Union. Crypto-asset service providers, such as BLOX, are required to share specific transaction data with the Tax Authority. You can view it as a further professionalization of the sector, similar to what has already been standard practice for banks and investment firms for years.
For more information about DAC8, we refer you to the information page of the Dutch Tax Authority.
What does this mean for you as a BLOX user?
During the course of 2026, BLOX will ask you to share additional information. This is necessary to comply with these legal obligations. We understand this may feel like a major step, which is why we want to be transparent.
Your data will:
- only be used to comply with DAC8;
- be stored securely and encrypted; and,
- only be shared with the Dutch Tax Authority, as legally required.
What information do I need to provide?
In order to report correctly, BLOX will ask you to provide the following information:
- your date and place of birth;
- your address;
- the country or countries where you are a tax resident;
- your tax identification number(s) (TIN).
After completing the information, you confirm through a self-certification that the tax information is accurate and complete. BLOX must verify whether the information provided is logical and consistent. This verification, also referred to as a reasonableness test, is mandatory. If there is doubt about the accuracy or completeness of the information, additional documentation may be requested. This is part of the regulations and not a personal assessment.
When does this take effect?
DAC8 has been implemented into Dutch national legislation and applies retroactively from January 1, 2026.
This means that transactions you carry out from that date onward fall under the new reporting obligation. The first report by BLOX will take place in January 2027.
Throughout 2026, BLOX will ask you to share the required information through the app or the web app.
What information is shared?
We do not automatically send an overview of your total crypto holdings. What does fall under the reporting obligation are the transactions you carry out, such as buying and selling crypto through your BLOX account. This data may be used by the Dutch Tax Authority to verify whether tax returns have been completed fully and correctly. Responsibility for declaring your assets remains with you.
This means:
- BLOX reports which transactions you have carried out.
- BLOX does not report how much crypto you own; you remain responsible for declaring your assets yourself.
A step toward further professionalization
DAC8 may feel like a major change. At the same time, this development fits within a broader trend in which crypto is becoming increasingly integrated into the regular financial system. Greater transparency and clear rules contribute to a more stable and professional market.
BLOX will continue to actively inform you about the steps required, so that you are well prepared and know what to expect.
Frequently Asked Questions

BLOX is legally required to record in which country you are tax liable and what your TIN is. Without this information, it is not possible to link your transactions to you, and we cannot comply with the European DAC8 directive. Your data is stored securely and only shared when legally required.
That depends on the country where you are tax liable. In the Netherlands, this is your BSN number, which can be found on your passport, identity card, or driver’s license.
Yes. The security of your data is BLOX’s highest priority. Your information is only provided to the Dutch Tax Authority when legally required. In addition, appropriate technical and organizational measures are taken to protect your data.

Providing this information is legally required. If you do not provide the requested information (on time), BLOX may temporarily apply restrictions to your account until your information is complete. You will always receive a notification and reminder before any measures are taken.
DAC8 applies to all transactions you carry out from January 1, 2026 onward. The first report by BLOX will take place in January 2027. Transactions before 2026 do not fall under this new reporting obligation.
No. DAC8 does not change the way taxes are calculated. The directive ensures that tax authorities can verify transactions, but you remain responsible for correctly filing your tax return yourself. If you have always declared your assets correctly, nothing changes for you in substance.
