What is Linea?
Linea is a Layer-2 network built on top of Ethereum and helps make transactions faster and cheaper. On Ethereum itself, transactions can sometimes be slow and relatively expensive, especially when the network is busy. Linea aims to solve that problem.
The network processes transactions outside of Ethereum itself. The outcomes are then bundled and recorded on Ethereum. This way you don’t have to perform every operation directly on the main network, but the security of Ethereum is maintained.
One important advantage is that Linea is fully Ethereum-equivalent. This means that existing apps, tools, and smart contracts simply continue to work without developers having to adjust anything. Linea is therefore not a replacement for Ethereum but an additional layer that makes the network more usable, especially when many people use it simultaneously.
How does Linea work?
Linea works as a zkEVM rollup. Simply put: transactions are bundled, verified and sent to Ethereum as a single proof. This means Ethereum has to do less work and transactions can be processed faster and cheaper.
In addition to processing transactions, Linea also plays a role in how value is distributed within the network. When users make transactions on Linea, they pay fees in ETH. A portion of these fees is ultimately burned, which means that this ETH is permanently removed from circulation. The other portion is used to buy back LINEA tokens from the market and also burn them. As the network is used more, the available supply of both ETH and LINEA therefore gradually decreases.
The LINEA token
The LINEA token is the native token of the Linea ecosystem. The total supply is around 72 billion tokens. Unlike many other networks, LINEA is not used for transaction fees: you simply pay them on Linea in ETH.
The majority of the tokens are intended to grow the network. Think of rewards for users (like airdrops), developer support, and programs that ensure sufficient liquidity on the network. There is also a portion reserved for a long-term fund that is managed by the Linea Consortium.
The role of the LINEA token is thus primarily to stimulate growth within the ecosystem. The token does not grant governance rights and therefore offers no direct influence on decisions within the network.
The technology behind Linea
Linea uses zkEVM technology but stands out primarily for how close it remains to Ethereum. The network is fully Ethereum-equivalent, which means existing smart contracts, tools and wallets work without adjustments.
For developers, that’s a major advantage. Instead of learning a new programming language or environment, they can port their existing applications to Linea almost immediately. This lowers the barrier to building on the network and accelerates the growth of the ecosystem.
Additionally, zk technology ensures that transactions are efficiently bundled and verified before they go to Ethereum. As a result, Linea combines two important properties: the scalability of a Layer-2 and the security of Ethereum itself.
The Linea ecosystem
The Linea ecosystem includes, among other things:
- DeFi applications with low transaction costs, where users can trade and earn returns
- An ecosystem fund for developers, intended to stimulate new applications and infrastructure on Linea
- NFT and gaming projects that benefit from fast transactions and low fees

Advantages of Linea
- Ethereum apps can be directly transferred
- Fast and cheap transactions Secured by Ethereum Mainnet
- Broad ecosystem with integrations within the Ethereum network
Disadvantages of Linea
- Relatively new network: Linea still has a limited usage history compared to older Ethereum solutions.
- Not yet fully decentralized: the network is still in development towards further decentralization.
- Strong competition: Linea operates in a crowded landscape with many other Ethereum Layer-2 networks.
Who is the founder of Linea?
Linea was developed by Consensys, a blockchain company within the Ethereum ecosystem. The network has no individual founder or separate CEO, but is developed and supported by the Consensys team, which was founded by Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin.
