What is SKALE?

SKALE (SKL) is a blockchain network designed to support dApps without gas fees, with high speed and good scalability. Instead of using a single blockchain, SKALE consists of a network of independent, interconnected blockchains. These are called SKALE Chains.

Each SKALE Chain is EVM-compatible (so it runs in the same environment as Ethereum) and can be configured specifically for a single application, or shared by multiple dApps. This makes the network flexible, fast and attractive for use cases such as games and AI applications.

How does SKALE work?

Instead of using a single blockchain, SKALE operates with a multichain model. Developers can set up their own SKALE Chain, so their application doesn’t have to compete with other dApps on the network. This keeps apps fast and smooth, even when it’s busy.

An important difference from many other blockchains is that users do not pay gas fees. Instead, the costs are arranged in advance by the app developers. For users, a dApp on SKALE therefore feels more like a regular app, without extra steps or costs per transaction.

The network itself is secured with a Proof-of-Stake mechanism. Validators stake SKL tokens to support the network and validate transactions.

The SKL token

The SKL token is the utility and governance token of the SKALE Network. The maximum supply is 7 billion tokens.

SKL is used for:

  • Staking: validators stake SKL to secure the network and earn rewards
  • Payment for network resources: dApps pay for the use of SKALE Chains
  • Governance: voting on protocol proposals

The technology behind SKL

SKALE Chains
SKALE Chains are separate blockchains compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). They run parallel to each other, giving dApps their own dedicated space.

Think of applications such as games in which many transactions take place simultaneously, AI applications that continuously process data, or DeFi platforms where users need to trade quickly. Because these applications run on their own chain, they continue to operate smoothly and aren’t slowed down by congestion on other networks.

Although SKALE Chains operate independently, they use a shared security system. Validators are randomly assigned and regularly rotated, making it difficult for groups to collude to manipulate the network. This provides an additional layer of security.

The network uses Proof-of-Stake, whereby validators stake SKL to verify transactions and earn rewards. This model is energy-efficient and supports fast transactions.

The SKALE ecosystem

The SKALE ecosystem focuses on dApps that require high performance without high costs. The network is widely used by:

  • Gaming projects with real-time interaction
  • AI-driven applications that require a lot of computing power
  • Web3 apps that prioritize user-friendliness
  • NFT projects where cost and speed are crucial

Benefits of SKALE

  • No gas fees for users
  • High speed
  • Pooled security between different chains
  • Suitable for gaming, AI and intensive dApps

Disadvantages of SKALE

  • The setup with separate chains per app makes the network somewhat less clear
  • Dependence on validator performance for optimal security

Who are the founders of SKALE?

SKALE was founded by Jack O’Holleran and Stan Kladko. O’Holleran is a technology entrepreneur and CEO of the project, while Kladko has a background in cryptography and distributed systems. Together, they form the team behind the development of the SKALE network.
