What is NIGHT?

NIGHT is the native utility and governance token of the Midnight network. The token plays a central role in the functioning of the network and is used to generate capacity on the network and to encourage participation in the ecosystem. Midnight aims to make privacy the standard within blockchain technology. Instead of making all data public, developers can build applications in which sensitive information remains automatically protected. Only when necessary can specific data be shared in a controlled manner.

How does NIGHT work?

The Midnight network uses a so-called token-resource model. In this model, NIGHT plays an important role in generating network capacity. Besides NIGHT, there is a second component: DUST. This is a shielded resource used for transactions and privacy-related functions within the network. DUST is automatically built up based on the number of NIGHT tokens someone holds.

The NIGHT-token

NIGHT is the utility token of the Midnight network and has a fixed maximum supply of 24 billion tokens. The token is used for governance, network participation and generating DUST capacity for transactions. The distribution of NIGHT is largely community-oriented. Through the so-called Glacier Drop program, users from various blockchain ecosystems could claim tokens. As a result, the token is spread across a large number of addresses.

The technology behind NIGHT

Midnight uses zero-knowledge proofs (ZK-proofs). With this technology, a user can prove that something is true without revealing the underlying data. The network also supports selective disclosure. This means that only the information that is necessary is made visible. For example, confirming that a user is older than 18 years without showing their full identity.

The network is designed as a privacy layer that can also work together with other blockchains. This allows existing ecosystems to add privacy functionality without completely changing their infrastructure.
