Moonbirds: everything you need to know about BIRB

What is Moonbirds?

Moonbirds is a well-known NFT collection launched in 2022 by the Web3 company Proof. The collection consists of 10,000 pixelated owls, each representing a unique digital collectible on the Ethereum blockchain.

NFTs became popular as profile pictures on social media and quickly grew into one of the larger NFT projects within the Web3 world. Holders of a Moonbird also gained access to exclusive community benefits, events and digital projects within the Proof ecosystem.

How does Moonbirds work?

Each Moonbird is an NFT on the Ethereum blockchain. That means that ownership of the digital owl is recorded in a smart contract.

The project also introduced a system called “nesting”. When an NFT is nested, it remains in the same wallet and is not traded. The longer a Moonbird remains nested, the more benefits and status the holder can gain within the ecosystem.

In addition to the NFT collection, Moonbirds is working on various expansions, such as digital worlds, community projects and creative collaborations.

The BIRB token

BIRB is the token of the Moonbirds ecosystem. Unlike the original Moonbirds NFT collection on Ethereum, BIRB runs on Solana as an SPL token. This makes transactions faster and cheaper, which better suits a token that can be used more broadly within the ecosystem.

The token is intended for activities and rewards related to the Moonbirds project, such as community initiatives and digital experiences. How exactly BIRB will be used can be further expanded in the future as the ecosystem develops.

The technology behind Moonbirds

Moonbirds uses the Ethereum blockchain to record ownership of NFTs via smart contracts. Each NFT contains metadata that refers to the owl’s attributes, such as color, accessories and other visual characteristics. These attributes partly determine a Moonbird’s rarity and collectible value.

Smart contracts also govern functions such as the transfer of ownership and interactions with other applications within the ecosystem.

Who is behind Moonbirds?

Moonbirds was originally developed by Proof, the company of Kevin Rose and Justin Mezzell. The project then temporarily came under the control of Yuga Labs, but the intellectual property of Moonbirds, Mythics and Oddities was sold in May 2025 to Orange Cap Games. That party is now responsible for the further development of the brand and ecosystem.
