What is Movement?

Movement is a blockchain project focused on building infrastructure with the Move programming language. Movement is working on a technical foundation on which multiple blockchains and applications can run.

Move is a programming language designed with safety in mind. The language was originally developed for Meta’s Diem project and is known for preventing common mistakes in smart contracts, such as accidentally duplicating or losing tokens.

The goal of Movement is to provide developers with an alternative to existing smart contract platforms, with greater emphasis on security, predictability and interoperability. By enabling Move-based networks to collaborate more effectively with existing blockchains, Movement seeks to bridge new infrastructure and existing ecosystems.

How does Movement work?

Movement consists of a set of building blocks that can be used to set up blockchains leveraging the Move Virtual Machine. These chains can run as standalone networks but are designed to communicate with each other and integrate with existing ecosystems, such as Ethereum.

For developers, this means they can build applications with Move while still tapping into existing liquidity, tooling and users of other blockchains. For users, this setup largely remains in the background: interactions occur through familiar wallets and interfaces, while the infrastructure handles execution and security.

The MOVE token

MOVE is the token that belongs to the Movement ecosystem. The token plays a role within the network and is intended for, among other things:

• network fees
• incentives within the ecosystem
• participation in governance

MOVE is not an application token, but an infrastructure token meant to keep the network and the associated blockchains running.

The technology behind Movement

The core of Movement is the Move-VM, a smart contract environment designed to prevent common errors such as unwanted token duplication or unintended asset transfers. Within Move, assets are treated as programming objects with strict rules, which contributes to safety and predictability.

Movement builds on this with an infrastructure that makes it possible to configure Move-based blockchains in various ways. Depending on the use case, networks can be tuned for aspects such as speed, cost or security. For developers, this means they are not tied to one fixed blockchain design but can build a network that better fits their specific use case.

Status of the Movement network

Movement is still in an active development phase. Not all parts of the infrastructure are fully live on mainnet yet. The project is gradually working on rolling out various Move-based networks and associated tooling.

This means that some features and integrations are still in a testing or early production phase. The focus is currently on building a solid technical foundation before the ecosystem is opened up more broadly.
