What is Osmosis?

Osmosis is a decentralized exchange (DEX) within the Cosmos ecosystem. The platform enables users to swap tokens and provide liquidity without the intervention of a central party, directly from their own wallet.

What sets Osmosis apart is that it does not operate as an application on top of another blockchain, but as its own chain. As a result, the protocol can determine how trading, fee structures, and upgrades are configured. In practice, this results in a DEX that is entirely built around DeFi usage, with plenty of room for customization and innovation, instead of a general-purpose blockchain where trading is just one of the applications.

How does Osmosis work?

Osmosis works as an automated market maker (AMM). That means that token swaps take place via liquidity pools instead of through an order book. Users can swap tokens, while liquidity providers deposit tokens into pools and receive a share of the trading fees.

An important feature of Osmosis is that liquidity pools can be set up flexibly. Parameters such as fees, incentives and pool ratios can vary per pool. As a result, not every market needs to operate in the same way.

For users, this means that trading pairs can vary in aspects such as fees, incentives and pool composition, depending on the type of market and the associated risk.

The OSMO token

OSMO is the native token of the Osmosis network and forms the economic basis of the blockchain.

The token is used for:

  • the payment of transaction fees
  • staking and network security
  • governance: voting on upgrades and parameters
  • incentives for liquidity within the ecosystem

The maximum supply is 1 billion OSMO tokens. Not all tokens are immediately in circulation; issuance takes place, among other things, through staking rewards and incentives. In addition, OSMO can be burned via governance, for example by destroying a portion of transaction fees or other protocol revenues, causing the effective token supply to decrease.

The technology behind Osmosis

Osmosis is built with the Cosmos SDK and operates as a standalone proof-of-stake blockchain within the Cosmos ecosystem. Validators ensure the security of the network and the processing of transactions, while OSMO is used for staking, fees and governance.

In contrast to DEXs that run as an application on top of an existing blockchain, Osmosis has been set up as a so-called appchain: a blockchain fully tailored to a single use case, in this case DeFi trading. This allows Osmosis at the protocol level to determine how liquidity pools, fees, and incentives work, without being constrained by the rules of an underlying chain.

An important technical foundation is the integration with Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC). Through IBC, tokens from other Cosmos chains can be traded on Osmosis directly and natively, without needing to convert or move assets via traditional bridges. Osmosis thus serves as a central liquidity layer within the Cosmos ecosystem.

The Osmosis ecosystem

The Osmosis ecosystem primarily focuses on:

  • token swaps within the Cosmos ecosystem
  • liquidity pools with customizable settings
  • cross-chain trading via IBC
  • governance and incentives via OSMO

Within Cosmos, Osmosis is widely used as a place where liquidity between different chains comes together, without assets having to leave the ecosystem.

Advantages of Osmosis

  • Own blockchain, specifically designed for DeFi
  • Strong integration with Cosmos and IBC
  • Flexible liquidity pools
  • Governance-driven development

Disadvantages of Osmosis

  • Especially relevant within the Cosmos ecosystem
  • AMM structure carries risks for liquidity providers

Who are the founders of Osmosis?

Osmosis was founded by a team of developers within the Cosmos ecosystem, with Sunny Aggarwal, Dev Ojha and Josh Lee as the principal co-founders.

Although these individuals played an important role in Osmosis’s inception, the further development of the network is largely governed through on-chain governance. OSMO holders collectively decide on upgrades, parameters and the direction of the protocol, making Osmosis today primarily a community-driven project.
