What is Plasma?
Plasma is a Layer-1 blockchain developed with a strong focus on processing stablecoin transactions. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies pegged to a stable value, such as the US dollar, and are widely used for payments and financial applications.
The network is primarily designed for situations where speed, low costs and reliability are important, such as payments and financial infrastructure around digital dollars. Instead of focusing on a wide range of applications, Plasma deliberately chooses a defined domain: stablecoins like USDT and other dollar-pegged tokens.
Plasma is EVM-compatible. That means that developers can relatively easily use existing Ethereum tools, wallets and smart contracts within the Plasma network.
How does Plasma work?
Plasma operates as its own blockchain, with a network that is itself responsible for processing and confirming transactions. Transactions and smart contracts are processed directly on the network, without relying on Ethereum as an underlying layer.
For users, the goal is for stablecoin transactions to go as smoothly as possible. Things such as gas settings and network complexity largely remain in the background, making the experience feel similar to other payment-focused blockchains.
For more advanced applications, the network’s native token is used. It plays a role in network security and the technical operation of the protocol.
The XPL token
XPL is the native token of the Plasma blockchain. The token is used to pay transaction fees, secure the network, and reward validators who contribute to the operation of the blockchain.
In total there are 10 billion XPL tokens. A portion of these is allocated to the ecosystem, the team and network participants. In that sense XPL serves a similar function to ETH within Ethereum: it forms the economic foundation of the network.
XPL is not intended as a stablecoin, but as an infrastructure token that keeps the Plasma network running.
The technology behind Plasma
Plasma is built as an EVM-compatible Layer-1 blockchain. Smart contracts run directly on the network, while developers can leverage existing Ethereum standards and tooling.
The network is designed to keep transaction costs low, which is especially important for applications that involve a large number of stablecoin transactions. To this end, various mechanisms are used to process fees more efficiently or structure them differently than in general smart-contract chains.
The technical choices within Plasma are focused on predictability and scalability, ensuring the network remains suitable for high-volume financial applications.
The Plasma ecosystem
The Plasma ecosystem focuses primarily on applications where speed and low costs are central. Think of:
- Stablecoin payments
- EVM-compatible smart contracts
- Financial applications where many transactions take place
Although Plasma is technically suitable for a wide range of EVM-compatible applications, the network deliberately emphasizes stablecoin transactions and payment infrastructure.

Advantages of Plasma
- Focused on fast and cheap stablecoin transactions
- EVM-compatible and accessible to Ethereum developers
- Independent Layer-1, without dependence on Ethereum for execution
Disadvantages of Plasma
- Less suitable for applications outside stablecoins
- Competition from other Layer-1 and payment-focused blockchains
Who is the founder of Plasma?
